Accident at Big Country Speedway- Photographer Injured

(10/1/2014)

On Saturday September 27, 2014, on the final night of racing at Big Country Speedway for the 2014 season our track photographer Mike Lewis was in a terrible accident on the track.  There had been a crash on the opposite end of the track and Mike was attempting to hitch a ride on the wrecker headed to assist.  He grabbed the mirror and stepped up onto the side step of the wrecker.  Lost his balance and slipped from the wrecker.  The driver unfortunately did not realize he was trying to get onboard.  Mike fell and his legs were run over by the rear wheels. He was taken by Ambulance to Cheyenne Medical Center where he underwent surgery on his right leg.  Dr. Rangitsch needed to perform a fasciotomy to release the pressure in the leg that would be preventing the lower leg from getting enough  blood and could potentially require an amputation.  Another surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20th, and potentially others after that depending on progress.

Mike is in a great deal of pain and the road to recovery is going to be long, difficult and expensive.  Mike volunteers his time to serve as our photographer.  The Wyoming Auto Racing Club as the managing organization for Big Country Speedway has established this fund to help Mike and his family through this difficult time.
