Tony Spain becomes owner-driver with the announcement of Big T Motorsports

(5-27-2010) BALTIMORE, MD.-- American kart driver Tony “Big T” Spain has started the engines on a new milestone in his racing career Thursday, announcing he will be the owner-driver for Big T Motorsports of Potomac, Ill., beginning in June, 2010.
Spain, who drove for Adrian Marci Racing last season where he won one race from the pole position, had four top five finishes and five top 10 finishes in 19 races, plans to race a limited local schedule with Big T Motorsports for the remainder of the 2010 season.
“This has been in the works for a while now,” said Spain. “Adrian Marci came to me in August of last season and told me in he was moving the team out West. He said he would like for me to go with them, but also understood that I would not be able too.”
Spain is an active duty Staff Sergeant in the United States Army and was forced to leave his ride when AMR moved their race team to Henderson, Nev., to race on the West Coast.
“I couldn’t meet my commitments to the Army and drive for AMR at the same time, which opened an opportunity for me to create Big T Motorsports,” said Spain. “I can now continue to race competitively on my terms, serve my country and meet my commitments to the U.S. Army, and secure a place in motorsports after the Army and my driving career is over.”
Big T Motorsports and Spain hope to be on the track Saturday, June 5, for the Automax Rental Saturday Night Special at Brunswick Speedway in Lawrenceville, Va.
“It’s going to be a challenge to be ready by then, but if we’re ready we will run. What we will not do is show up just to run a race,” said Spain. “We’re showing up to win races. We’re not running for points or a championship this season. Big T Motorsports will have the equipment and everything it needs to be successful and win races or we will not run.”
