For the first time in 2010 season, the weather cooperated and brought warmer, more seasonal
temperatures to Macon, Illinois.
(Macon, IL) For the first time in 2010 season, the weather cooperated and brought warmer, more seasonal
temperatures to Macon, Illinois. With that came over 130 racecars over six UMP sanctioned divisions as
well as terrific and exciting racing action to the crowd.
Rick Standridge, native of Collinsville, has been known as the guy to lead all 100 laps in the 1987 Herald
& Review 100. On Saturday, he was once again welcomed to victory lane with a Late Model feature win.
After an absolutely fabulous race along with Springfield’s Roger Brickler, Standridge won his heat race by
literally an inch and then started on the pole for the 25-lap A-Main feature, also the third leg of the Midwest
Big Ten Series.
Macon’s Kerby Damery started opposite Standridge on the front row and led the early laps. Following a
caution on the sixth lap, Standridge would take the lead from Damery on the bottom of the fourth turn. As
Damery attempted to regain the lead on the frontstretch, Damery lost control of the racecar and went flying
into the turn one barrier and up the fencing. He would come back down, along with ripping down the fence
and escape his wrecked no. 10 Late Model.
Standridge raced alongside Jeremy Nichols and later in the race Steve Lance, Jr. in the battle for the top
spot. Standridge rode the high side nearly the entire race and won his first Late Model feature at Macon
Speedway in many years.
Another exciting feature event was the Modified 20-lapper. Argenta’s Danny Smith and Decatur’s Aaron
Burcham raced side-by-side for nearly four consecutive laps before Burcham took control of the race and
ran on to the win. Smith pulled in with the second-place finish and last-time-out feature winner Mark
Tullis took home third.
The Touchstone Energy Sportsman feature had the two only feature winners of 2010 battling it out for
another checkered flag as Dennis Vandermeersch chased down Dave Crawley, Jr. for 15 laps.
Vandermeersch would not be able to catch Crawley and that snapped the streak of three-straight
Touchstone Energy Sportsman wins for Vandermeersch and marked the third feature for Crawley.
Kevin Crowder won a caution-less Street Stock main event for his first feature of 2010, beating out
defending track champion Blake Shelley. Jonathan Drake took the Amateur Hornet feature, but not in his
yellow 52, but in the blue 46, a car he was allowed to use by the Eller family. Joe Reed claimed another
feature in the Pro Hornets class, his fourth in five weeks of racing.
The monster truck “The Raminator” will makes its yearly appearance on Saturday, May 29, on Armed
Forces Night. A full show which will pave the way for Macon Speedway’s first NASCAR Night and
Northern All-Star Late Model Series on Memorial Day Monday.
