Veteran Joe Winchell Gets the Loot at 417 Southern Speedway's Short Track Hero Fall Brawl Sportsman 200

(11/28/2017)

RONNIE BACELO·TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2017 417 Southern Speedway, Punta Gorda

The weather was perfect as was the crowd on hand for the 2nd Annual Short Track Hero Fall Brawl Sportsman 200. Fifteen cars took time and it was lightning fast Tommy Kelly in his sharp looking brand new car taking the top honors. Kelly drew the 1 pill to line up at the front of the field. Kelly who wanted to conserve his tires on his hotrod opted to start at the rear of the field and take the Back to Front Challenge Bonus monies.

The start of the event was pretty much all Mike Smith in the Bobby Mobley owned #29 machine. Smith marched through the field lapping cars every lap with hopes to set himself up for a great finish. Donnie Ollie shadowed Smiths every move along with Steve Darvalics and Bruce Bennett enroute to the halfway break.

Devin McLeod, Brandon Morris, Joe Winchell and Tommy Styer all were engaged in a battle or two of their own for many laps. At the halfway mark it was still Smith over Ollie at the front of the pack. Once back underway the duo continued to pull away until Ollie’s machine started to smoke and was given the black flag ending his night as he headed to the pits.

Darvalics, Bennett, Smith battled loose racecars and swapped spots while others were in conservation mode. There were a lot of tight battles going on around the 3/8th mile speedplant as the laps clicked off. Devin McLeod would spin off of turn 2 with tire issues and head to the pits.

On the restart it was Joe Winchell who worked his way up the outside to take over the top spot from Smith. Winchell would pull away to a full straight away while Kelly marched through the field on a mission. Two late race cautions would see Winchell, Kelly and Smith battle it out for the lead. Smith and Kelly would get tangled up coming out of two ending the night for Kelly with Smith relegated to the rear of the lead lap cars.

On the final restart it would be Winchell and Brandon Morris coming off turn 4 Winchell would get the lead and never look back enroute to his first win in two years. Morris would come home second ahead of Tommy Styer.
