UPIR FALL CLASSIC WRAPS UP FIFTH RACE SEASON

(9/12/2014) The Bays de Noc Convention and Visitors Bureau 2014 UPIR race season is in the books. Mother Nature dealt a few blows to racing this season with the first rain outs since UPIR began racing in 2010. Due to rescheduling rain outs, Bink's Coca-Cola Bottling 5th Annual UPIR (Yooper) Fall Classic was combined with the Drive to a Cure sponsored by UP Bras That Fit, Magic 97 WGLQ and the Island Resort and Casino. A raffle with over $1,000 in prizes was held with all proceeds going to the Delta County Community Foundation earmarked for breast cancer victims. The September 5 races were canceled due to safety concerns from wet conditions and held on September 6 with Powder Puff and Mechanics races following. A banquet, followed by awards, was attended by over 300 people after racing concluded. The 2014 race season saw 130 different racers hit the dirt and increased sponsorship. The board of directors of the Upper Peninsula International Raceway Association have a tentative schedule for 2015 with increased race dates and special events. UPIRA President Tom Dubord stated, “We are grateful for the support of racers, fans, local business sponsors, the U.P. State Fairgrounds and volunteers for another successful race season. Plans are in place for more improvements in the 2015 race season”. 2014 Champions: Sport 4's – Erik Marenger; Junior Micro-Sprints – Dylan Larsen (Shiocton, WI.); 500 Micro-Sprints – Kristy Peterson; 600 Micro-Sprints – Josh Bartel; Street Stocks – Rob Willis; Modified – Dale Peterson 2014 Sportsmanship Awards: Sport 4's – Dave/Maggie Martin; Junior Micro-Sprints – Logan Getzloff; 500 Micro-Sprints – Gabriel Zellner; 600 Micro-Sprints – Jim Groleau; Street Stocks – Paul Wagner; Modified – Lonnie Dalgord 2014 Rookie of the Year: Sport 4's – Cory Corwin; Junior Micro-Sprints – Avry Corrigan; 500 Micro-Sprints – Jesse Liss; 600 Micro-Sprints – Bart Kostreva (Crivitz, WI); Street Stocks – Rob Willis; Modified – Austin Cayer September 6 Race Results: Sport 4's Heat 1: 1st Justin Lauscher, 2nd Robert Bridges, 3rd Ethan Thomma Sport 4's Heat 2: 1st Randy DeGrave, 2nd Hattie Bourdeau, 3rd Erik Marenger Sport 4's Heat 3: 1st Reggie Lantagne, 2nd Dave/Maggie Martin, 3rd Chris Lassila (Norway, MI.)
