(Warrensburg, MO) Smokin’ hot summer nights mean but one thing to dirt-track aficionados … get your race on time! Race night it was as Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) once again opened the gates for drivers and fans on another night of weekly championship action for Heartland Waste race night with 68 cars on hand competing in 15 total events.

Six Pure Stocks signed in for competition for their heat race and main-event action. Previous feature winner from a few weeks back, Kyle Rowland returned for another CMS visit and claimed the heat race ahead of another previous main-event winner, Darrin Christy of Kansas City and point’s leader Leroy Morrison. 

A nice field of 21 B-Modifieds may their way to the track for three heat races and a main event for the night. Lucas Isaacs ran strong in the opening B-modified heat to hold off Eddie Bray, Jr. of Archie, Missouri in second and Allen Bush third. Previous week feature winner Jacob Ebert drove to the win in heat two over strong-running Ben Stockton and Dean Wille while Jordan Clemons claimed an exciting heat three ahead of Troy Carlyle and Richard Brainard. 

Grand Nationals made their third appearance this season with five cars on hand for racing. Mike Taylor drove to the win in the Grand National heat race in a good one over Don Marrs and previous feature winner Gary Donaldson in third.

There were 16 Street Stock drivers on hand for a pair of heat races and 15-lap main event. Seven-time feature winner Brett Wood of Warrensburg picked up right where he left off last week by claiming the opening Street Stock heat over seventh-starting Troy Turley and eight-starting Allen Perryman. Heat two was action-packed with Kevin Perkins finishing ahead of Bobby Raybourn, and Steven Littrell at the line.

Twenty USRA Modifieds battled in three heat races and a 25-lap main event to close out the night. In preliminary heat-race action, winners included Dalton Kirk over Steven Bower, Jr. and James Eaton in heat one. Heat two went to Terry Schultz over Steve Twenter and Dean Wille, while Eddie Bray, Jr. drove to the win over Buddy Benedict and David Wood in heat three.

The Pure Stocks were up first for their 10-lap main event with Kyle Rowland and Darrin Christy leading the way from row one. Lee Scott of Holden got off to a tuff start when his car stalled on the initial start with mechanical gremlins sidelining him for the night. From the onset, Christy took command of the race with Rowland about a half straightaway behind in second. Lap-after-lap Christy extended his lead over his closest pursuers and went on to claim his third feature win of the year over Rowland, Don Johnson, and Leroy Morrison, Scott was fifth with Gary Akers unable to start.

B-modified action was next on the field but a three-car pileup in turn three on the opening night led to a complete restart with Darren Locke, Olen Stephens, and Ben Stockton involved in the incident. Although Stockton and Stephens were slow to get out of their cars at first, both were able to walk away from their machines under their own power, albeit a little shaken up. Locke was able to rejoin the field for the restart.

Lucas Isaacs and Jordan Clemons took the green for the ensuing restart as the 18 remaining cars set sail for 15 laps. Clemons and Isaacs ran side-by-side at the front of the field while Carlyle and Ebert did the same for the third and fourth positions. By lap three, Clemons opened up a one-car length lead over Lucas Isaacs in second but the caution flew for a car over the berm putting the field under a yellow. Clemons led Isaacs, Carlyle, Ebert, and Wille when green-flag racing resumed.

A great battle for third began to shape up with Ebert, Carlyle and Wille by lap six as Clemons and Isaacs continued their torrid pace out front. Lucas Isaacs grabbed the lead on lap ten but shortly after Ebert came flying by in turn two on the low side and went to the lead as Clemons slipped back behind a lapped car to third behind Isaacs.

From then on it looked like Ebert would go uncontested to the finish but on the white-flag lap, the 66 of Ethan Isaacs got hooked with a lapped car to draw a caution late in the race. For the green, white, checkered flag-finish, Ebert led Lucas Isaacs and Clemons inside the top three. For the finish it was all Ebert as he claimed his second-straight main event and third overall this year ahead of Lucas Isaacs, Troy Carlyle, Cody Frazon, and Clemons inside the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Wille, Brainard, Bray, Terry Schnakenberg, and Chris Stout.

In the Grand Nationals’ main event pole-sitter Mike Taylor and Don Marrs of Shawnee, Kansas brought the field to green with Gary Donaldson searching on the low side by lap five to grab the lead over Tanner, while Marrs slipped to third. With each passing lap, Donaldson of Rayville, Missouri began to pull away opening up a near straightaway lead on Tanner. A late-race caution for Justin Shelton flew on lap nine as Donaldson brought the field back to the green flag ahead of Tanner.

For the final few laps Donaldson again distanced himself from the rest of the field as Tanner had all he could handle with Marrs pursuing him in the runner-up position. Just as the white flag was set to fly, Marrs made contact with the front-stretch wall and went over the banking in turn one to draw a caution, which sent him to the tail. In the end, Donaldson went on to claim his second straight main-event for the Grand Nationals over a late-charging James Glackin in second, followed by Tanner, Marrs, and Shelton.

Street Stocks were up next for their 15-lap showdown as Brett Wood was in search of his eighth main-event on the year; however it was Kevin Perkins and Bobby Raybourn who led the field to green. Raybourn charged to an early race lead over Turley and Perkins with Allen Perryman inside the top four. On lap two, Turley got a little sideways and Wood had to spin to avoid contact as the yellow flag flew. On the restart Raybourn led Turley, Perkins, and Perryman with Brett Cox fifth.

Bob King went for a spin to draw another caution shortly after the restart with Raybourn still in control. Turley stayed close in second as the race resumed through lap eight with Perryman in third and Cox fourth. Caution flew again on lap eight as Raybourn once again went back to work out front ahead of Turley. On lap ten, Turley put heavy pressure on Raybourn as the two battled for the win. One lap later, on lap 11, Turley took command on the low side.

For the remaining laps, Turley looked good en route to his first win this season. Raybourn ran a strong second with Brett Wood making a last-lap pass for third at the checkers. Brett Cox recorded his best finish of the year in sixth, followed by Perryman, Jay Prevete, Perkins, Jermiah Wilson, King, and Brian Inlow.

For the USRA Modifieds, Steven Bowers, Jr. and Eddie Bray brought the field to the initial green flag. On lap two, Justin Moon was involved in a spin to draw an early caution. For the restart, Bowers led Terry Schultz, Bray, and Dalton Kirk. By lap five, David Wood moved inside the top five with Steve Twenter close behind. On lap six, caution flew again for Buddy Benedict’s spin in turn two. Bowers again led the charge on the restart over Schultz and Bray.

Schultz went to the high side several times looking for a line around Bowers but was unsuccessful with each attempt. On lap eight, Brian Johnson’s night came to an end with problems in the rear of the car as the caution flew for his stalled vehicle. Once again for the restart Bowers held the point with Schultz and Bray still in pursuit. Benedict’s night came to an end when he stopped on the track and was unable to continue.

On lap ten, a grinding crash occurred with Nick Pence, David Wood, Dennis Walrath, and Christopher Moon all involved. While all drivers were okay, their cars were badly damaged in the incident as emotions ran high. James Eaton suffered a flat tire as Gunner Martin was also involved in a separate incident with Eaton receiving a flat tire. By lap 15, Bowers still held strong with Schultz choosing to switch lines to the low side to try and gain ground.

By lap 20, Schultz had caught Bowers but was unable to make the pass for the lead despite several bids to take command. As the checkered flags flew, Bowers claimed his first-ever $1,000-to-win main event at CMS with Schultz coming away as runner-up for the second-consecutive week, although Schultz did take command of the point standings. Eddie Bray, Jr. finished a strong third ahead of Dalton Kirk, Tim Karrick, and Danny Scrogham inside the top six. Rounding out the top ten were Gunner Martin, Dean Wille, Steve Twenter, and James Eaton.

Next week is the always popular Kid’s Night at the Races featuring foot races on the track for five age divisions for both girls and boys. Competing age groups are 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12. The foot races, held on the track, take place during intermission time. Many activities are planned on Saturday, August 2 for kid’s night, in which all kids up to age 12 entering the gates that night will receive a free hot dog and drink courtesy of promoters Earl and Susan Walls. In addition, each foot race winner in the five boys and girls division that night will receive medals for their foot race wins. Donated bicycles will be given away to age groups for both boys and girls as part of the Kid’s Night celebration.

The Mid-America Lightning Sprint Drivers, who are the special guest class on Kids’ Night, will participate in an on-track autograph session during the foot race activities and all kids up to age twelve will receive a free goody bag stuffed full of memorable items including school supplies, trinkets, candy, coupons, and school supplies. Donations of aforementioned items are being taken at the pit entrance for kid’s night up to Saturday, August 2.

For Kid’s Night next week, gates open at 5, driver’s meeting/pill draw close at 6:30, hot laps at 7, and racing at 7:30. Adult general admission ticket is $12, Military w/I.D. $10, Senior Citizens 65+ $10, Kids aged 6 to 12 $5, five years and under are free. All pit passes $25.
