Satterlee Scores PENNational Victory
(5/6/2012) Rochester Mills , PA 's Gregg Satterlee made his first start of the season a winning one in picking up one of the biggest wins of his young career in the ULMS/UFO Penn National 51 Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models. Current UFO Point leader Keith Barbara and Jacob Hawkins brought the field down for the green. Barbara took the lead at the start and began to open up a lead, with Jason Covert in second and Hawkins in third. Barbara set the pace and opened up a sizable lead in just a few laps. The first of only two cautions in the event happened on lap 12 when 4th running John Garvin spun in turn one and tagged the wall and was finished for the night. Barbara grabbed the lead again on the restart over Covert, Hawkins, Tony Musolino and 9th starting Gregg Satterlee. Barbara opened up a lead again, while Satterlee picked up way thru the field to move into second by lap 25, over Covert, Alex Ferree (who was up from 18th), and Hawkins. On lap 26 the second and biggest yellow of the night happened, involving Jon Hodgkiss, Kari Gasser, Jim Stephans, and Denny Fenton. All continued. Barbara took the top spot again on the restart with Satterlee right behind. The front running pair pulled away from the rest of the field, while Ferree battled with Covert and Mike Johnson for third spot. Satterlee made his move in traffic on lap 39 and once in front opened up a big lead. Barbara began to battle with Covert for second with Ferree right behind. As the race wound down, Satterlee was a straight a way ahead of Barbara, with Ferree now ahead of Covert, while Jared Miley (who suffered problems in his heat and did not finish) made a wild charge coming up from 29th spot to 5th. At the checker it was Satterlee, picking up his second PPMS win of his career, Barbara, Ferree, Miley, Covert, Jason Rider, Hawkins, Colby Frye, and Brandon Burgoon. Steve Baker, in his new machine, had just passed Hawkins and Frye for 9th and 8th on lap 50 tagged the wall in turn one and two and ended up 14th. Heats for the 31 cars on hand went to Jacob Hawkins, John Garvin, Keith Barbara, and Jason Rider. The Awesome Designs Hard charger was Jared Miley who advanced 25 positions. Seventh finishing Jason Rider was the K&N Performer of the race. Newcomers included, Jacob Hawkins, Matt Lux, Boom Briggs, Billy Dickson, Brent Rhebergen, Gregg Satterlee, Jason Covert, Robbie Blair, Davey Johnson, Colby Frye and Denny Fenton.
Not to be outdone, Gregg's cousin Andrew Satterlee, Rochester Mills, PA, made his first ever PPMS start a winning on in the Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Pro Late Models. Ron Hall and Tommy Schirnhofer Jr. brought the field down for the green. Schirnhofer grabbed the lead at the start, with Hall and Dan Angelicchio right behind. Schirnhofer weathered several restarts and held the top spot over Angelicchio and Satterlee, who came up from 8th starting spot. Satterlee moved into second by lap 12 and pressured Schirnhofer for the next 7 laps. The last lap turned out to be Schirnhofer's undoing as a yellowed occurred just as the leaders took the white, setting up a green/white/checker situation. On the restart, Schirnhofer took off, with Satterlee right behind. On the last lap Satterlee pulled even with Schirnhofer and just got by him coming for the checker in an exciting finish. Following Satterlee and Schirnhofer were Angelicchio, Hall, Colton Flinner (who pitted on lap 3 and charged up from the tail), Mike Reft (from 19th), Mike Pegher Jr., Justin Lamb, Laura Lukon and Steve Beatty. Picking up the K&N Performer of the race was Mike Pegher, Jr. The heats were won by Colton Flinner, Dan Angelicchio, and Mike Pegher Jr., for the 24 cars on hand.
Jake Simmons returned after last week's first lap wreck and grabbed his second feature of the season in the Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Late Model Sportsman class. Simmons of McKees Rocks PA, defeated Wayne Carbo, Curt Bish, Mitch Wattelet, Nick Kocuba, and Craig Koteles, in a slim field. Nick Kocuba was the K&N Performer of the race. Jake Simmons won the heat race.
Eric Goldberg, Pittsburgh PA, returned to action after a couple of seasons of not racing much, in his familiar #714 to pick up the win. Joe Podolinsky and Chase Evans trailed. K&N Performer was Joe Podolinsky. Eric Goldberg also won the heat.
Monongahela PA's Todd Weldon picked up his third win in a row in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns. Weldon was followed by Bernie Blair Jr., Logan Crewl, Adam Carson and Peter Block, who was also awarded the K&N Performer Award.
